Their Life Story
Barry Nelson Jones – born 9 May 1928 to Nelson Henry and Winifred Jones (nee Bridget) in Rangiora. Half brother to Bell and Betty (whose mother Jet) died soon after giving birth.
Married to Doreen Lydia Partridge (born 22 Feb 1930) in 1951 (daughter of Jack and Ida (nee Truman)).
Their early married life was in Christchurch, where their 3 sons were born – Kevin, Stuart, and Les – Barry worked for Gough, Gough and Hamer, and John Chambers, before securing a job as a Traffic Officer. They transferred to Kaikoura, having 2 memorable years there before moving back to the family home in King St Rangiora on Barry’s mother’s death.
They stayed there for over 50 years – Barry working at Palmer and Doak, and later the Nth Canty Electric Power Board – and together they ran a Driving School (teaching hundreds to drive), and Defensive Driving Courses. They were involved in the St Johns Ambulance (Barry being made a Life Member of the St Johns Fellowship). Doreen was an integral part of a walking group for many years, and also the Art Group.
Barry passed away in 2011 – aged 83 – and a year later Doreen shifted to the Mountainview Village in Timaru to be close to her youngest son Les (and wife Di), and enjoyed the community there for 7 years until passing away in 2019 – aged 89.
They are survived by their 3 sons, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren
