Maata TIRIA Asher
Loving daughter of Koro Nīheta Williams (Ngā Rauru, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Pūkenga) and Tawhake (Daisy) Tawhitapou Takarangi ((Te Ātihau-nui-a-Pāpārangi, Taranaki whānui, Ngā Rauru)
Tiria was a remarkable person whose fighting spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. As a dedicated activist and a committed member of both the Māori Women’s Welfare League and The Labour Party, she exhibited extraordinary courage in advocating for others, often standing up to authority. This unwavering resolve was truly her superpower.
As the eldest in her large whānau, Tiria was nurtured by our beloved Nanny Daisy to become a true matriarch. She cherished her siblings—Bill, Ngaere, Terry, Kaewa, Hera (Sal), Mano, Rangi—and the cousins who lived with them, Aunty Tua and Bill. During its vibrant days, Kai Iwi served as the heart and home of our Williams whānau.
In her role as a teacher, mum made a profound impact, particularly on children who were naughty or faced learning difficulties. She had an exceptional ability to recognize and nurture the potential in every child.
As an Awhina, she felt guided by her Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Her home was always open to those in need, reflecting her belief that true wealth is not measured by what one accumulates, but by what one shares with others.

Jack Atirau Asher (Ngāti Pukenga, Ngāti Pikiao) married Paekitawhiti Ngakuru (Ngāti
Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Kurauia, Ngāti Tahu)
Dad was raised here in Rātana Pā by Hineiti Arani & Te Aohou Wirihana who also raised
Raniera Te Aohou Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana.
Marshall and mum established Te Tatau Pāriha – (Sydney) where he lived most of his adult life. He also returned home to live with mum in Tauranga Moana during her final years.
Marshall then returned to Australia before he succumbed to illness after mum passed and his ashes were brought home to be interred here, for this is where his heart belongs. As faithful as mum’s Angels.
He mihi atu ki a koe, John Miller, for the professional photos included here that were taken at various political events attended by our whānau.
