Viliami Tavake

3 June 1977 – 9 February 2023

Forever in our Hearts

Vili was a humble, giving soul—his giant hugs made you feel safe, his deep voice melted hearts, his strong and harmonious singing turned heads, and his booming, infectious laugh made you smile. A Kava champion and the best Lu sipi chef. A leader and a rescuer for his family and friends and a security guard no one dared cross. The biggest and softest teddy bear with the Greatest heart of Gold.

Viliami Tavake—known to friends as “Vili”—passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at age 45 at his home in Wallington, London. His cause of death remains unascertained.

Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and raised in Sopu’O Taufa’Ahau, Vili was deeply proud of his Tongan heritage. He is survived by his mother, Kaloni Lehauli, his brothers Siosiua (NZ), Kali (USA), Tu’uta (AUS), and Chris (Tonga). He leaves behind his devoted wife, Tupuna Mitchell-Tavake, and their young daughter, Malieta. He also cherished his older children: Tevita Tavake and Pa’ula, Arahia, and Laeva Wade (NZ), as well as his godsons, Sonu’u and Moses Halaufia (UK).

Vili was preceded in death by his father, Tevita Tavake, grandparents Viliami Tavake and Tapaita, and brother Ate. A respected top security guard in London, he was admired for his strength, loyalty, and love for his family—especially his youngest daughter, Malieta, with whom he shared six precious years with.

His Tongan Putu (funeral) was held at Riverside Methodist Church, Hammersmith, on March 9, 2023, followed by his cremation at Mortlake Crematorium the next day. His service was officiated by Revd ‘Iesinga Vunipola and honored by the presence of H.E. The Hon Titilupe Fanetupouvava’u Tu’ivakano, High Commissioner of Tonga, and her family.

Viliami’s ashes were laid to rest in Rotorua, New Zealand, on March 9, 2024. Malieta wears you on her heart everyday, continue to watch over your children Vili.
